Announcements – Week of 8/3/2022

Throughout the school year, we will send a weekly update to help you stay informed about what we are doing over the next few weeks. Typically, detailed information about an event occurring in the next few days and general reminders about what is on the horizon will be included.

The reminders for this week are:

  • There is the correction for the theme for tomorrow (Thursday). We had initially posted it as Team Day, which was what Thursday was last year. It will be “Crazy Hat Day,” so dig out the crazy hat and wear it to rehearsal. Just be sure you can still see and play your instrument.
  • Some reminders about the Induction Ceremony and Dance on Thursday, August 4th:
    • Students will be dismissed at 7:00 pm to go home to shower and change clothes
    • First-year marchers should wear a white shirt. It can be a dress shirt, a golf shirt, or even a t-shirt, as long as it is white.
    • The Induction Ceremony will start at 9:00 pm in the auditorium, and the dance will begin in the band room as soon as the induction ceremony is over
    • This dance is only for marching band students. There will be other dances where friends can attend.
    • The dance will finish promptly at 11:30. Please be sure a ride is waiting to take the students home
  • Reminders for the Exhibition Performance and Covered Dish Potluck Dinner on Friday, August 5th:
    • Students should plan to arrive at 6:00 to warmup.
    • Dress for the students will be summer uniforms which are:
      • Purple show shirts, khaki shorts, socks, and sneakers for the winds and percussion
      • Purple show shirts and black Capri leggings for the guard members
    • We ask that each family bring a covered dish to share. It can be an entrée, a salad, or dessert. Likewise, it can be purchased at a store or, better still, one of your family’s favorite foods.
    • Tables will be set up under the covered walkway next to the band field to leave your food. Please be sure to pick up the empty dishes and serving spoons when you go.
    • Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on during the exhibition performance and to use while you are eating.
  • Be sure to attend the parent meeting at 7:00 pm in the band room on Monday, August 8th. We will discuss the function of the different committees, the upcoming mattress sale (we have already raised $1,000.00), the Olde English Band Competition, the rehearsal schedule once school starts, band fees, and football game expectations.
  • There are rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday (8/9 & 11) from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Students are expected to be in attendance unless I have been notified that the family will be out of town.
  • The winds and percussion will perform at the teacher’s Back to School Rally on Friday, August 10, from noon until about 2:30. Students will wear summer uniforms. Guard will not need to attend. Additional information will be included in the newsletter next week.
  • Wind players (brass & woodwinds) will need folios and lyres for the back-to-school rally and football performances. I have them in stock in the band room for students to purchase if required. The price list is available here.
  • Dr. Persinski has asked for some assistance to help at the Back-to-School Kickoff on Saturday, August 6th, from 11 am-3 pm, at the Newport Walmart. This is an excellent opportunity for students that would like to get some service hours in for different civic groups here at school or would like to get more involved with leadership in the school and community. We would also like to have as many families as possible come out and support this program as it goes to help families that cannot provide the basic school supplies, so many of us take it for granted.
  • Lastly, our goal for the mattress sale is to see if each family can have one person stop in the day of the sale to check out the mattresses available to purchase. It is as easy as:
    • Please invite your family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors to the sale until you find one person who says they are coming to check it out. Please make sure they mention your student’s name at the checkout desk, so your child gets their cash incentive.
    • Please join this Facebook event as “going“ or “interested” and share the event on your personal Facebook page. Here is the link: bit.ly/beds4northwestern2022 – please click to join.

Also, check out the information here about the sale.

To wrap up, we want to thank all of you for such an excellent start to the school year. To this point, this has been a great two weeks, and it wouldn’t have been possible without your support and cooperation. We are very excited about the school year and watching the students continue to grow as we progress through the school year. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or concerns, and we hope to see all of you at the parent meeting Monday evening.
