End of Semester Band Updates

We are looking forward to wrapping up the first semester and jumping into concert band and symphonic band next week! Please be sure to take a few minutes and read through everything in this email carefully.

  • Students from across the region submitted audition videos earlier in January for the SCBDA Region 3 Honor Band. The videos were evaluated over the weekend, and the top performers for each instrument were selected to move on to All-State auditions. I hope to announce next week which students were selected to the All-State band and NHS students who will participate in the Region 3 Honor Band. Our students submitted outstanding performances that represented themselves, our band program, and the school at a very high level, and I am extremely proud of all of their hard work! Congratulations to all who participated and to the following Northwestern students for earning an All-State Audition Callback:
    • Jaden Brown, Trumpet
    • Gabrielle Harvey, Flute
    • Chandler Herron, Clarinet
    • Meleah Hoff, Oboe
    • Kaelin King, Clarinet
    • Carlyle McDowell, Bassoon
    • Hayleigh McMahan, Clarinet
    • Jackson Shaw, Tuba
    • Derek Thompson, French Horn
  • The Coffee Fundraiser continues through next Wednesday, February 10th. Students have received the brochure and order form in class, and it is also attached to this email. Please share this information with family, friends, and coworkers who may be interested in purchasing coffee to support the band program! All orders, and payments, are to be turned in no later than Wednesday, February 10th. Checks should be made payable to NHS Band Boosters, and please enclose your order form and the payment in an envelope with the student’s name and “Coffee Sale” printed on the envelope.
    • 50% of the Coffee Sale profit will go to your BCP account. Please take advantage of this opportunity to raise additional funds to help with fees and other band/guard related expenses!
  • All band families should have received a letter in early December that shows any outstanding fees. For those that still owe all or part of the $250 marching fee, please be sure it is paid by Friday (the end of the semester!) If you need extra time to complete your payment, please contact Mark Yost by phone or email before the end of the day on Friday!
  • Final exams will finish during class today (2/3) and tomorrow (2/4) for those who have not already completed their scale test.
    • For Marching Band with PE students who do not have the space to complete their final Pacer Test at home, Ms. Carlson will administer the test during class Wednesday and Thursday. Please be sure to bring appropriate shoes and clothing for approximately 15 minutes of running.
  • For students who are not enrolled in band 2nd semester and have a practice instrument at home, we need to have the instrument returned to the band room no later than noon on Friday, February 5th. These instruments must be cleaned and sanitized before they are reassigned for use next semester. If the instrument is not returned, the student will be responsible for taking the instrument to a repair shop and pay the fee to have it cleaned and sanitized. If you cannot get the instrument returned this week, please call Mr. Yost immediately so arrangements can be made to get the instrument to school.
  • We will continue with the hybrid attendance model of instruction for the foreseeable future. However, students will now be required to log in to their classes during the time they would normally attend if they were at school. If students do not attend the zoom meeting on time, they will be marked absent for that class period. They will be expected to participate in warmups for the first portion of the class and then log off of zoom and have a recording assignment to turn in by the end of class. We will thoroughly cover this process in class next week.
    • Students will also receive the course syllabus and a semester calendar the first day they are in attendance. Please ensure that the course syllabus’s electronic verification is completed and submitted before Friday, February 12th.
  • All students will need to bring their instruments on their first day of class next week. We will play in class every day!
    • For students in need of a school-owned instrument, we will distribute sanitized instruments in class next week.
  • As always, please be sure to check Canvas to keep track of how your child is doing in class and visit our website to keep up to date on the latest band activities and band booster events.

We greatly appreciate your support of the program during these difficult times and look forward to when we can share live performances again with you.

Really sad to miss this big event but have two other grand dudes in their band concert at Dutchman Creek Middle School—same exact time.

Can't wait!
